The History of the Bar Code

Two Drexel University graduates came up with the idea for the bar code and obtained a patent for it in 1952. It took more  technical development, including the laser, and the involvement of several major corporations, to lead up to the first real-life test of the first automated checkstand at the Kroger Kenwood Plaza store in Cincinnati on July 3, 1972.
