Wednesday, December 11th, 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
Come share stories of Philadelphia industry, manufacturing, city planning and development. This month, experience research within the library for a tour of Government Publications and the Newspapers and Microfilm Center. Materials from both collections will be on hand for browsing and discussion. We will be meeting on the second floor within the Newspapers and Microfilm Center.
Librarian supervisors for these collections will be making the presentations. Nina Coffin for the Newspapers and Microfilm section and Marija Gudauskas for Government Publications.
Marija was quoted by the Inquirer last December, providing information on street numbering in Philadelphia. “Before the Philadelphia system, streets were counted inward from both the Schuylkill and the Delaware Rivers,” said Marija Gudauskas, the Free Library of Philadelphia’s federal depository coordinator. “This led to two Second Streets, two Eighth Streets, and multiple other duplicated streets that met at City Hall.”

Take the elevator or the main staircase, then make a right and walk towards the second-floor west gallery. You will see the Telling Tales exhibition. The Newspapers and Microfilm Center is located at the end of this hallway. If you see computers rather than maps and prints, you are walking down the opposite hallway!
