Campbell Soup Company has been located in Camden, NJ, since 1869, when it started as the canning firm of Anderson & Campbell, focusing particularly on canning New Jersey Beefsteak tomatoes. The company was transformed by the invention in 1897 of condensed soup, by Dr. John T. Dorrance, who eventually became the president of the company, leading it until his death in 1930. It became the Campbell Soup Company in 1922 and in 1957 opened the corporate headquarters we will be visiting.
Scott Hearn has been Corporate Archivist for Campbell Soup Company since 2021, having started there in 2018 as the Assistant Corporate Archivist. Scott is responsible for the preservation and maintenance of the company’s archival records, which include physical artifacts as well as corporate documents. Scott will give us details on the history of Campbell—focusing on Campbell’s manufacturing and technology—and show us selected items from the collection of physical artifacts going back to 1871.
Scott got his BA in History and MA in Public History from Rutgers-Camden. He has also worked for the Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia (produced by the Mid-Atlantic Regional Center for the Humanities at Rutgers-Camden), PhillyHistory.org, and the Philadelphia City Archives.

Registration is required, and attendance is limited. Please let Reese Davis (reesepdavis@gmail.com) know if you want to attend, as we will accept registrants on a first-come first-served basis.

[Attendees’ names must be submitted to Campbell about a week before the on-site visit. On the day of the visit, you will enter through a security check point at a gate off S. 11th St. and be directed to visitor parking, which is in front of the building. Scott will meet us in front of the building.]

[For background to the on-site visit—or if you cannot attend—we direct you to Scott’s presentation of last November which he delivered to the Princeton Preservation Group. You can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMqpKAditRw]
